Frits Mondriaan (The Hague 1853 – 1932 Rijswijk) mainly painted landscapes in the style of the Hague School. As 'Uncle Frits' he was Piet Mondrian's first teacher. He was initially a shop owner in The Hague, but his love for art led him to start painting in 1885. He was apprenticed to Willem Maris and often went into nature to study, sketch and paint the surroundings. His oeuvre includes impressionistic forest landscapes, water features and a few still lifes. This forest landscape is also typical of the style of Frits Mondriaan. The painting depicts the entrance to the Manor 'Huis te Manpad' in Heemstede.
