Gerardus Johannes Delfgaauw grew up in the Dutch region of Westland. The polder landscape of his native region was therefore a great source of inspiration for the artist. He also painted the Rotterdam harbor area, winter landscapes and various village- and cityscapes. He developed his own naturalistic and impressionistic style of painting and knew how to play with light and reflections of the water like no other.
