Born in 1855, painter John Hulk followed in the footsteps of his father Johannes Hulk, who was a painter as well as a shopkeeper. Hulk was academically trained at Amsterdam's Rijksakademie and then at the prestigious Académie Julian in Paris. Hulk is known for his watercolours and oil paintings depicting scenes of English fox hunting. The artist presumably owes his nickname 'John', to the period he spent in England. Once back in the Netherlands, he mainly painted animals and hunting scenes such as duck and hare hunting. In 1907, Hulk jr. was appointed curator of the well-known Teylers Museum in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
