The Dutch artist George Jan Hendrik (Geo) Poggenbeek (Amsterdam 1853-1903 Amsterdam) maintained close contact with the Hague School. Although he initially worked in an office, he eventually chose a career within the painting profession (partly because of a friendship with artist Theo Hanrath). Poggenbeek was educated at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He became friends with Nico Bastert, among others, with whom he would often spend time painting together: first in Gelderland and Drenthe in the Netherlands, but later also in Switzerland, Italy and France. The towns and landscapes in Normandy and Brittany were particularly attractive to both artists. Poggenbeek's artworks are characterized by a dreamy style, reminiscent of works by Anton Mauve. Poggenbeek spent three months with Mauve in Laren in 1886 and was strongly influenced by his work. Poggenbeek uses a color use of soft basic tones, but with a typical bright green, which is also clearly visible in this painting. Although the Dutch landscape was a favorite subject of the artist, he would undertake a few study trips to France in 1893, 1895 and 1897 as well. Poggenbeek has won several medals at exhibitions with his beloved paintings. Today, his art is represented in various museums at home and abroad, including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Kunstmuseum the Hague.
